Cathedral Grove fight heating up

PORT ALBERNI, B.C. - Protesters are going back to Cathedral Grove Tuesday in an attempt to stop the government from cutting down trees to build an additional parking lot.

A small group of environmentalists blocked loggers at the popular Vancouver Island tourist spot on Monday.

Water, Land and Air Protection Minister Bill Barisoff says the parking lot is necessary, because there aren't enough parking spaces for visitors.

But the protesters say the government is cutting down too many giant trees for a parking lot that is unnecessarily large.

The new lot will accommodate more than 150 cars, RVs and buses – a substantial increase from the current 20 stalls.

The environmentalists say they will be back every day until there's a public review of the parking lot decision.
