Protests begin at Catherdral Grove

Environmental activitists are planning a protest as work gets underway on a new parking lot at Catherdral Grove.

The are calling for a peaceful demonstration to continue throughout the construction. Trees began coming down Tuesday to clear room for the lot.

A stand of trees that is part of Catherdral Grove will be taken down to make way for a two hectare parking lot, which the government says is needed for highway safety.

The lot will hold about 150 vehicles, a substantial increase from the current 20 stalls.

But the environmentalists don't agree that 18 old growth trees need to be cut down and are looking for a different solution.
